SOUTH CAROLINA DONKEY AND MULE ASSOCIATION
SC DONKEY AND MULE ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER
August 1,2010
Well Summer has come with all the heat and humidity our fair part of the Country is very famous for. This doesn't lend itself to getting all those outdoor chores done any easier (unless they are done at 2:00 AM) Just a reminder that even though their is not a lot going on right now, we do have lots of things coming up and they will be here before you know it. Our Annual Meeting will be Jan. 9th 2011. I know it is 6 months away but The big thing so far is the Fair. I have included Class Sheets, a Class Description, and Entry Forms for both the Donkey & Mule Show and the Fun Show on Sunday. We have advertised in Mules and More Magazine along with Stable Mates. Also look for us in the SC Dept. of Ag. Market Bulletin this year. I have to apologize for my editing of our Roster. Some folks were left off that should have been included. If you go to the website you can go to the Contacts Page and click on the Membership List there is an updated version. Again I do apologize. On to more fun stuff!! A Note From Olin Hey ya'll. Hope everyone is keeping cool. The summertime can be tuff on some of us old folks but somehow held so far this year you ought to be ashamed of yourself. Lots of fun and good food was had and we sure The Five Day Ride turned out super. There was a little bit of rain but all said and done the weather was pretty The Fair will be here before you know it and we should have already started to pound the pavement for class get 5 people to give $10.00. You will be letting people know you support the Show and that is part of what what Remember we need bodies also. We would like as many people there all weekend, but we will need more keep it. OJ
Larry's Low Country Ride
Low Country Ride 2010 This year's ride started with a bar-b-cue supper prepared by our friends Orlando & Louise Ojeda. They worked all afternoon preparing some great food. Mrs. Roma Dobson & Mrs. Ute Reeves provided additional side dishes as well as desserts. Jim Winstead & Nancy provided us with a couple of homemade pound cakes to go with some fresh strawberries picked that afternoon by Mrs. Beth, Jim, and myself. With all of that food, no one went to bed hungry. 9am Saturday morning found 11 wagons & 3 outriders heading out for a full day's ride. First break was down by the river. As we were pulling out, Cole Jackson demonstrated a quick way to dismount from a horse. Other than scaring his grandmother, no one was any worse for the wear. We'd had a cool, cloudy morning, ideal for the animals as well as teamsters. I had hoped the county would have graded the roads, but no such luck. Lunch break was right at noon, with Bill finding a great spot. After lunch, we learned to be careful what you wish for. As the afternoon heated up, we turned onto a freshly graded road. Dust & heat really made us all appreciate the ungraded roads. Just about to afternoon break Cole once again provided some excitement, or rather, his horse did. Deciding to just quit and lie down with Cole. I still believe somehow Cole did this just to ride in the wagon. After a nice break at the Jenkins Hunt Club, a tired dusty crew began heading home, arriving back before 4pm. Several folks were heading out, so Nancy & Donna got busy getting hamburgers & hot dogs cooking. Baked beans, chips, & a strawberry trifle rounded out the evening meal. Otis & Rebecca, as well as Robert, had to pull out before supper, but G.W. & Marie, Jimmy & Mary Beth, as well as Pat & Tom and their grandson took time to eat and visit before heading out. After supper several people headed to the local sale barn, while therest headed to the field for a bonfire & roasted marshmallows. Sunday morning we lost two more wagons with Ronald & Mary as well as Wayne & Pauline having to head out due to illness. With the addition of Henry & Beth, and Tom & Ute and their grandson, we were back to six wagons & two outriders, but Kirby & Donna decided to ride instead of drive, so five wagons and four outriders set out. Due to dust and expected high temperatures, we cut a few miles off the route. Even with a cool lunch break by the river, it was really warm and dusty, so we took a little extra time at our stop. Seems no one was in a hurry to head out, but finally we loaded up and made our way back homeward, arriving around 3:30pm.Tom & Ute, as well as Henry & Beth headed on out, but Jim, Bill, Kirby & Donna, and Rick & Connie stayed for a quick supper of leftover bar-b-cue, and of course, more strawberries. Seems twenty five pounds of strawberries goes a long, long way. By 6pmeveryone had headed home, and another Low Country Ride was history. Once again I'd like to thank Orlando & Louise, Jim, Henry & Beth, Donna & Kirby, Connie, Mrs. Roma, Mrs Ute, and Karen & Melody for their help and vittles. Last but not least Nancy, she really puts up with a lot from me, and only now and then has a Hall spell. This year she even took vacation to ride with me, but somehow we never did get to ride together. Maybe next year...
Skips Show
Skip let me know that his Show May 7th made $7000.00 for Hospice of North Carolina. Pretty good “cause Skip said turnout was kinda light. That just goes to show that Carolinians have big hearts. A 7 day cruise was raffled off and lots of prize money was given out. Somehow it came back in to support the Charity. . Lots of thanks and appreciation to those that could make it.
The Wagon Train left out from Kirby & Donna's about 9:30 am on the 22nd of May. There were 8 wagons along for the ride. They included Kirby Ingram of Sumter, Olin Jackson of Lugoff, Rick Gary of Laurens, Jimmy Anderson, G.W. Tisdale both from Manning, Don King from North Carolina, Buck from North Carolina, and Wayne Williams of North Carolina. The fella's went about 20 miles per day and had pretty good accommodations most every night.
Saturday night hey spent in William Herbert's pasture and was treated to abarbecue chicken dinner. I think they got a little wet that night. They got to see Mr.Herbert's Frying Pan Collection and some other interesting things. The next morning it was up and off another 19 miles to the Fox Pen in Foreston. The weather was not to good that night, as a matter of fact Don King said the wind picked up his wagon and shook it around a bit. After a good breakfast it was off to Jimmy Anderson's house. Mary Beth and friends put on a big supper for the guys and Jimmy had built an outhouse and shower for them. They thought they were back home. G.W traded his Belgians for a pair of Waking Horses to finish out the ride and Jimmy had to call it quits. He said he had to work. Wednesday morning had them on there way to Manchester State Forest. There they got the chance to get showers and clean up a bit before the last day back to Kirby's. There were not many campers and they had Mill Creek Park just about to themselves. Thursday morning it was time to pack up and head home. Just short 10 mile ride from Mill Creek to our house. Everyone got back safely and had a real good time. Thanks go out to everyone that came and rode. I think they might try the same route next year only in the opposite direction. I would also like to thank The Manning Times, they had an article and some pictures of the guys in the paper. Check out the article on our website!! Many Thanks go out to those that supplied food and places to stay for the guys, I know it takes a lot of work to put on something like this but it is a lot more fun when you have lots of good folks involved. Thanks Again, Kirby

Gary come off the Board this year. Last year I neglected to say that even though your Term
may be up, you don't have to vacate the seat. So be thinking about some options for 2011.
Directions will be in he October Newsletter.

The 5 Day Ride
Tuesday night found them at a Thoroughbred training barn in Summerton. Talk about being at opposite ends of the equine spectrum. As it turns out Rick and Wayne got two horses from there to take home. I guess the horses decided that Track life just wasn't for them.
